It’s kind of wild to say it out loud, but Bread and Butter has now been open for four months. Four months of early mornings, busy days, late nights, and a whole lot of coffee — and we couldn’t be more grateful for what this little cafe in the heart of Chester has already become.
Since day one, we’ve tried to make Bread and Butter more than just a place to grab a bite. One thing we’ve loved doing is changing up our lunch and dinner menu every month, making the most of what’s in season and letting the ingredients guide us. It keeps things fresh (literally), and it means there’s always something new to try when you pop in.
We’ve also started welcoming in some amazing local products, and honestly, our neighbours are ridiculously talented. Our beer selection now features some incredible brews from Spookton, the microbrewery just around the corner. And yes — we’re still proudly serving bread from Bear Bakery, the family-run bakery that’s become a local legend.
What’s really taken us by surprise, though, is how much life has come into the space after hours. We’ve hosted everything from artist meet-ups to gaming nights, and it’s been incredible watching our little courtyard turn into a space where creativity and community collide. Rufus Court has been buzzing too — Junkfest, hosted by our neighbours at Junk Box, brought in such a great crowd, and there’s always something happening, like the mellow jazz and blues afternoons at Alexanders Live every Sunday.
Looking ahead, we’ve got some big (and slightly scary) plans. We’re hoping to launch monthly supper evenings soon, giving us a chance to play around with new ideas and dishes in a more intimate setting. And with everything getting busier (in the best way), we’re also looking to grow our team and bring on another part-time chef.
And just when we thought things couldn’t get any more exciting… we found out we’ve been nominated for Best Newcomer in the Taste Cheshire Food & Drink Awards 2025. Honestly, we’re still pinching ourselves. To even be on that list, among so many amazing local spots, is mind-blowing.
So from the bottom of our buttery hearts — thank you. For showing up, for spreading the word, and for being part of this journey. We’re feeling very lucky, very tired, and very excited for what’s next. Bring on the colder months — we’ll have something warm waiting for you.
Love, The Bread and Butter Team

Wow – our first month at Bread and Butter has flown by in a blur of learning, laughter, and yes… a lot of butter. Nestled in the heart of Rufus Court, we’ve spent these first few weeks figuring out who we are as an independent business, and more importantly, who we want to be.
Our mission has become crystal clear: to serve Traditional British food that’s simple, generous, and fairly priced. No fluff – just honest, hearty dishes made with love (and plenty of butter, of course).
And you know what’s taken us by surprise? Breakfasts in Chester! We’ve been blown away by the morning crowd – it turns out, Chester is full of early risers looking for a proper start to the day. So from June, we’re adjusting our hours and opening from 8am to make sure all you hungry folks can grab your breakfast fix before work.
Whether you want to sit in and enjoy the vibe of our cozy spot in Rufus Court, or dash off with a takeaway breakfast and coffee in hand, we’ve got you covered. We’ll be serving up all your breakfast favourites alongside quality teas and coffees to keep your mornings fuelled.
By happy accident, Bread and Butter has started to take on the feel of a bistro café – and honestly, we’re loving it.
As well as brekkie, we are also slinging out a lunch & main menu of seasonal delights; home-made pies, sausage and mash, Welsh rarebit, summer potato salads and more! Come join us as we grow, evolve, and bring something a little different to the Chester food scene.
Here’s to many more months of eating and drinking well!

On the 2nd of May, we unlocked our doors in Rufus court, brewed a cuppa, and served up the very first plate of proper British comfort food from our kitchen. It’s been a whirlwind ever since — full of friendly faces, honest flavours, and a whole lot of excitement.
We’re a small, independently run café and bistro in the city centre of Chester city, with a simple mission: to bring traditional British cuisine back to the table, made with care, served with pride, and enjoyed in good company. From hearty full breakfasts and home-made pies to fresh seasonal salads and classic scotch eggs, everything we do is rooted in the flavours we grew up with — the ones that feel like home.
Our space is more than just a place to eat — it’s a place to gather. Whether you’re popping in for a quiet mug of tea, meeting friends for brunch, or just after a warm, filling plate on a grey day, we’re here for you.
We’ll be using this blog to share stories from our kitchen, upcoming menus, seasonal specials, and a few behind-the-scenes peeks at what it takes to run a neighbourhood bistro. We might even throw in the odd recipe or two!
Thank you to everyone who’s already stopped by and helped us get off to such a warm start. And if you haven’t visited yet — the kettle’s always on.
Until next time, Bread & Butter team
